Internet Radio is defined as an audio service transmitted via the Internet. Internet Radio includes companies like giants like Pandora and Spotify and newcomers like Vertigo. Also included are large network broadcasts such as CBS Radio or simple webcasts that organizations large and small provide to their audience. All together, internet radio is taking over our lives in more ways than we know.
According to a recent Internet Radio Trends Report, eMarketer reported in 2014 that U.S. monthly digital radio listeners had grown to 160 million. That is over 50% of all U.S. citizens and 63% of Internet users. The report goes on to say that this audience is expected to grow to 183 million by 2018, which outpaces our population growth. It also quotes that Nielsen reported in January 2015 that 67% of all music listeners access streaming services in a typical week. Additionally, as you can see in the graph below, the average number of ours spent consuming Internet Radio is steeply on the rise as well. In 2014 it was estimated that users spent an average of 13 hours and 19 minutes per week engaging with a source of online radio.
